Spain holds the top position in Europe for LGBTI legal protection, and contains three of the continent’s most established queer destinations. It is about as close to an unqualified recommendation as this guide gives — which is exactly why it is worth understanding what earns that rating.

Laws Travellers Must Know
- Marriage and adoption equality since 2005, among the earliest in the world.
- A comprehensive 2023 law established legal gender recognition based on self-determination, banned genital surgery on intersex minors, prohibited conversion practices, and outlawed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics.
- Spain now ranks #1 on the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map, ending Malta’s decade-long hold on the top spot.

Neighbourhoods
Chueca — Madrid
Madrid’s historic LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, just north of Gran Vía. During Pride it becomes the centre of the city, with stages in Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, Plaza del Rey, Puerta del Sol and Plaza de España.
Sitges — Catalonia
A Mediterranean village that has been one of Europe’s most iconic gay resort destinations since the 1970s. Pride in June; Bear Week in September.
Gran Canaria — Maspalomas
One of Europe’s most established LGBTQ+ beach destinations — the Maspalomas dunes and the Yumbo Centre, with year-round queer nightlife.
Pride 2026
Madrid Pride (MADO) — the largest in Europe
25 June – 5 July 2026. Opens with Orgullo de Barrio in Chueca, 25–30 June. Parade: Saturday 4 July, 6:00pm. Draws an estimated 2–3 million people. Organised by FELGTBI+ and COGAM with support from AEGAL.
Sitges Gay Pride
10–14 June 2026, with the parade on Sunday 14 June.
Barcelona Pride
Late June into July 2026, theme “All Realities, One Pride”, parade from Plaça Universitat. Dates vary between listings — confirm with the official organiser before booking around it.
